Selling a Phygital Artwork

EXP0 allows artists to sell their works through a phygital model, combining the digital and the physical into a single collectible edition.

This approach offers buyers and collectors:

  • the assurance of acquiring an authenticated and traceable edition,
  • the ability to materialize the artwork through a unique fine art print,
  • and a clear legal framework protecting both the artist’s rights and the buyer’s rights.

The EXPO phygital format is designed to protect creation, enhance rarity, and deliver a premium collecting experience, aligned with the standards of the contemporary art market.

What is a phygital artwork?

An EXPO phygital artwork is based on two inseparable components, which together form a single unique edition within a Limited Series:

1. The NFT

The NFT acts as a certificate of authenticity and provenance, recorded on the blockchain.

It allows to:

  • identify the artwork and the specific edition,
  • certify the exact numbering of the edition (1/1, 1/10, 1/100),
  • prove ownership of the edition by its Holder,
  • record the complete transfer history (provenance),
  • guarantee that the declared number of editions can never be exceeded.

The NFT is transferable on the secondary market, ensuring transparent and secure circulation of editions.

2. The physical print

Each NFT includes the right to a single unique physical print, corresponding exactly to the numbered edition.

The print:

  • is produced only once per NFT,
  • is numbered according to the associated edition,
  • may be claimed immediately after purchase or at a later date,
  • is produced by a professional laboratory or by the Artist, according to the parameters defined when the Series is created.
Key takeaway

The NFT and the physical print together form one single collectible edition, ensuring strict, verifiable, and irreversible rarity.

Legal nature of the NFT

The NFT serves as a certificate of authenticity and provenance recorded on the blockchain.

It certifies in particular:

  • the existence of a numbered edition within a given Series,
  • ownership of this edition by its Holder,
  • the right to obtain the corresponding unique physical print,
  • the complete history of ownership transfers.

The NFT itself does not constitute a transfer of copyright.

It does not represent:

  • an automatic transfer of economic rights,
  • a transfer of the artwork itself,
  • an independent authorization to exploit the work.
Important

Usage rights for the artwork are defined exclusively by the license chosen by the Artist (©, CC-BY, EXPO-S, EXPO-X).

This license is contractually attached to the NFT and follows it in the event of resale, ensuring that each successive buyer receives exactly the same usage rights — no more, no less.

As a result:

  • the NFT acts as a technical medium, proof, and transfer mechanism,
  • the license constitutes the legal authorization for use,
  • their combination ensures clear, traceable, and legally secure transmission.

Right to the physical print

Each NFT grants its Holder the right to claim a single unique physical print corresponding to the owned edition.

This right may be exercised:

  • immediately after acquisition,
  • or at a later date, unless otherwise specified by the Artist.

Once the print has been delivered:

  • the NFT is marked as “print claimed”,
  • this information is irreversibly and visibly recorded in the certificate.

Neither EXPO nor the Artist may produce additional copies under this NFT.

Resale and secondary market

In the event of resale:

  • the NFT is transferred to the new owner,
  • the transaction is automatically recorded on the blockchain,
  • the provenance of the edition is guaranteed end to end,
  • the print status (“claimed” or “unclaimed”) remains attached to the NFT.
Good to know

An edition whose print has not yet been claimed may, depending on market conditions, benefit from increased value, as the right to the print represents a rare and irreversible attribute.

Frequently asked questions

Can I resell my NFT?

Reselling the NFT is always permitted, regardless of the chosen license, because:

  • the NFT represents the certificate of authenticity,
  • it certifies provenance and ownership of the collectible,
  • it does not transfer any usage rights beyond the license,
  • the license (©, CC BY, EXPO-S, EXPO-X) continues to apply to the artwork,
  • each buyer must comply with exactly the same conditions.

Free resale of the certificate ≠ expanded usage rights.
The NFT circulates freely; the license does not change.
